TOEFL essay topic (May 9) - Takeshi

Hi, I took TOEFL test last Sarturday. It'd been a little while since I took one last, and I felt it was really hard. I think if I really want to get a good score of it, I need to study seriously ne. Especially for the reading and listening part. Virtually, I had to choose most of the questions with possible guess, so they might be all incorrect. But I think the speaking and listening parts are ok. I've been too lazy to study for tests these days, but I talk and write in English many hours almost everyday, which I believe helps me a alot. It might be better than studying for paper tests after all. Anyway, as usual, I'm going to tell you about the essay topic this time. It was a rather easy topic and easy to write. The alloted time is 30 minutes and a sucessful wirting should have about 300 words.
(This time, somehow, I didnt have enough time left to make a decent conclusion, so I'm afraid they might lower my score because of it. )

>Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

>"Children should learn to manage their own money at a young age."

>Money is essential in our lives. Without it, nobody could survive almost anywhere. Some people, however, don't know how to control their money well and risk their lives. Therefore, I agree with the idea that children should be taught how to manage money effectively when they are young, so that they can aviod ruining their lives years later.

>First, children don't know how to control their own money yet, and often use up all the money unintelligently. It is ok to do so while they live with their parents, but once they start living on their own, they have to pay for a rent, utilities bills, and food all by themselves. Sadly some adults can't manage their own money well, and struggle to pay for those things. I believe it is because they didn't learn how to use money effectively when they were children, so they don't know how they can control their own money successfully.

>Second, it is also important for children to learn how to save money. In the faltering economic situation like today, nobody can predict what would happen to them even in the foreseeable future. Therefore, children must learn how to save money for a rainy day to find their ways out of such difficult stuations.

>Last, by getting to know how to manage money, children can learn other disciplines too. Young people today tend not to be patient and to do whatever they like to. However, they can't always have their own ways once they go out into society, and they have to cooperate with others. When they are taught how to control their money, they can also learn to be paitient, and do other activities, such as study or sports, perseveringly.

>In conclusion, for these three reason, I believe it is important for children to learn how to manage their money at a young age.

Also, there is one more essay you have to make in the writing section. It is supposedly much harder than the creative essay, because at first, you have to read an academic material within a short time and listen to the lecture, and then write about it. But I think it is easier because all you have to do is to summarize what you read and what you listen to. I think you can get a good mark, hopefully a full mark, with this kind of childish English below. (the time is only 20 minutes and the ideal number of words is around 150)

>The author of the reading passage points out there are three ways how the number of cine toads, which are destroying the environment in Australia, could be reduced. The lecturer is, however, against each of the three ways.

>First of all, although the reading passage recommends a new nation fence should prevent the toads from multiplying, the professor believes their eegs and young won't be affected by the fence, because they normally live in rivers or streams, and they can move freely, not bothered by the fence.

>Second, the reading passage suggests that volunteers can help capture and destory the toad, but she casts doubt on this method, because inexperienced and untrained vollunteers might not be able to tell the difference between the toads and other native creature, which are not considered to be pests, and kill them all together.

>Third, the speaker is strongly against the idea, mentioned in the reading, that virus should be used to control the population. This virus are allegedly effective only to the toads, but she believes otherwise. She further explains that the virus might affect other types of toad, such as king toads, and possibly move their ways all over the world, leading to the end of the entire eco-system.
