I'm sure you can read it all right. Just don't pay much attention to difficult words or expressions, and enjoy the story itself. I myself didn't understand some of the sentences or phrases there, but it didn't keep me from reading further. I believe reading English booking is a really good way to learn the language. If you still can't follow the story, I think there is Japanese translation for ths story available online. As for me, I just finished three Christmas stories written by Truman Capote. They are surely written in simple English.
