I think it is often used among native speakers in daily conversation. As you said, they use the word when they are impressed by something. These days, young people use it fairly often, and it doesn't have a strong meaning any more. It can mean just "good" or things like that. I just now remember that on My blog, I once placed a video clip from Youtube, where "Natalie" uses the word. I put down the link below. She is being sarcastic there, saying the word.
